The arrival of Runeforging has made POE 2 Items more interesting to evaluate because players now have several ways to improve or repurpose equipment. A low-level unique may have been easy to ignore in the past, but new crafting systems can turn some of these items into viable endgame gear. The same applies to rare items with strong modifiers but one obvious weakness.

For players who regularly sort through POE 2 Items, the main lesson is simple: immediate usefulness is no longer the only thing that matters. Runeforging allows certain bases to scale, unique powers to move into other items, and unwanted modifiers to be replaced. This makes the stash and loot filter decisions a little more complicated, but also more rewarding.

Low-Level Uniques Get a Second Chance

Many leveling uniques have strong effects but poor base values. Once players reach maps, the damage or defensive numbers can become too low to justify keeping them equipped.

Runeforging changes this for qualifying uniques under level 55 by allowing their base item tiers to be upgraded. Their underlying stats can therefore move closer to endgame standards without removing the unique modifiers that originally made them interesting.

This makes certain leveling drops worth keeping even after they have served their original purpose.

The transformation can sometimes go beyond simple stat increases. Brutus’ Lead Sprinkler, for example, can undergo a major damage conversion through reforging, changing the way the item functions for a build.

Runic Ward Changes Armor Evaluation

Runic Ward introduces another defensive choice. It provides a separate buffer that comes into play when life reaches 1, giving players another tool for surviving dangerous situations.

During early progression, adding Runic Ward to armor with Verisium can be attractive because the normal defensive properties do not suffer the same kind of penalty seen on high-level gear.

The situation becomes more complicated in endgame content. High-level Runeforging can add Ward while reducing armor, evasion, or energy shield. Players therefore need to decide whether the new defensive layer is more valuable than the protection they are giving up.

The Brass Dome shows how specialized this can become. Its traditional armor can be exchanged for a huge amount of Runic Ward, creating a completely different defensive profile.

Unique Effects Become Build Components

The ability to extract unique modifiers is arguably one of the biggest changes to item hunting. Certain Kalguuran and Ezomyte uniques can be destroyed so that their defining effects become socketable runes.

This means a unique does not have to be useful as a complete item to be worth farming.

Trampletoe is a good example. Its overkill explosion effect can be extracted and transferred into a rune, which can then be used with another pair of high-level boots. Players can effectively combine a powerful unique effect with a rare base that has better stats for their build.

This approach creates more room for customization and makes some previously overlooked uniques much more valuable.

Runic Remnants Add Direction to Farming

Random unique drops are still part of the game, but Runic Remnants provide a more focused method of searching for specific equipment.

Players can discover rune combinations and store them in their Runebook. Once enough runes are placed into an active Remnant, the resulting encounter can be directed toward a particular unique item category.

That means a player searching for a unique axe does not necessarily have to farm every possible source and hope for the correct result. With the right recipe, the farming process can be narrowed toward the desired item type.

For build planners, this can save a lot of time because the farming goal becomes much more specific.

Alloy Crafting Gives Near-Misses More Value

Alloy Currencies make imperfect rare items worth another look. Instead of abandoning an item because one modifier does not fit, players can potentially replace that modifier with a more appropriate crafted option.

This makes the initial quality of a rare item especially important. A strong base with several useful modifiers can be worth investing in even if it is not perfect when it drops.

The system also gives players another reason to learn the crafting options available to their builds. Understanding which modifiers can be replaced can make the difference between selling an item immediately and turning it into useful equipment.

Runeforging Changes the Loot Mindset

The most important effect of Runeforging is the way it changes the definition of valuable loot. Players are no longer limited to asking whether an item can be equipped right now.

A low-level unique might be upgraded later. A unique with an unwanted base might contain a modifier worth extracting. A rare item with one bad stat might be repaired through Alloy crafting. A Runic Remnant recipe might also turn future farming into a targeted activity.

For players focused on expensive endgame projects, the POE 2 Jeweller's Orb remains one of the many resources that can matter when optimizing equipment, but Runeforging adds a broader layer of decision-making before a final item is even completed. The process becomes less about waiting for perfection and more about recognizing useful potential.

A New Approach to Building Gear

Runeforging makes item hunting feel more like an ongoing crafting process. Players collect pieces that can be upgraded, extracted, modified, or combined rather than simply searching for finished equipment.

That does not make every drop valuable, and strong random drops are still exciting. What has changed is the number of paths available after a promising item appears. For many players, that added flexibility is what makes the new itemization system worth paying attention to.

With Runeforging, the hunt for better gear is no longer just about finding the right item. It is also about understanding what an imperfect item could become.
